Chap.10, by Freeman, T. “Do the Genesis 5 & 11 Genealogies Contain Gaps?” Ans.=no

The ancient Masoretic text of Gen.11 does not have a 2nd Cainan, but some of the Septuagint texts do. Niessen argues that the latter is an inaccurate revision of the former (p.309-10) to agree with Manetho’s inflated Egyptian king list.  As a result the Septuagint adds 586 yrs to the geneloogy and has different age numbers. The Samarian Pentateuch does not have a 2nd Cainain. Luke’s genealogy text copies dating after the 4th century have the 2nd Cainian, but the texts prior to the 4 century including Josephus do not list a 2nd Cainan.(p. 313). Thus it was concluded that a 2nd Cainian did not exist. The Gen. 11 text is correct.

Chap.4, by Mayhue, R. Argues against adding a new book or view to bible based on science.  Ross, Hugh The Fingerprints of God, Promise Publ. 1989, described and old age creation of 16 billion yrs.  H. Ross in Creation and Time, Nav. Press 1994, p.56 stated “The facts of nature may be likened to a 67th book of the bible.” Do we really need to revise how we interpret the bible due to the recent findings of science?  Mayhue refutes Ross and asserts the truthfulness of the bible. He cites an International Council on Bible Inerrancy (ICBI), 1986,  which included 300 biblical scholars and affirms his position in their concluding documents.p.122-4. http://library.dts.edu/Pages/TL/Special/ICBI.shtml, http://www.alliancenet.org/CC_Content_Page/0,,PTID307086_CHID750054_CIID,00.html

Chap. 7 “Can Deep Time be Embedded in Genesis?” By T. Cragen p.193  Carl Henry in God, Revelation and Authority, 1983 uses the term Scientifico-Concept Exegesis in which science takes a priority in interpretation of scripture. P.208  P.T. Pun uses this in A theory of Progressive Creationism. H Ross also uses it in The Fingerprints of God, which use day ages of millions of yrs each. A theory that does not violate biblical exegesis is time dilation.

p. 198  Bly, John, “On Time Dilation in Cosmology” Creation Research Society Quarterly, 34 (June 1997) p.26-34 abstract by John Byl, Ph.D

“In recent years various authors have suggested that time dilation could solve the problem of seeing distant galaxies in a young universe. Time dilation which arises in both special and general relativity, could presumably slow earth clocks with respect to those on distant galaxies. This article examines how time dilation can arise within various relativistic cosmological models. It is found that in most cosmological models time dilation is either not significant or is in the wrong direction. Strong time dilation can occur in a static universe with pressure terms. However, in that case the predicted galactic red shifts would be much greater than those actually observed. It is concluded that the time dilation hypothesis thus faces a number of serious problems that must still be resolved.”

Chap. 2 D.W.Hall p.53 claimed that the reformation church fathers including Luther, Calvin, Wesley and the Westminster Divines wrote about and held to a 6 day creation and a view of inerrancy and divine inspiration of the scriptures. Also Anglican bishop Hugh Latimer held this view. This was based on careful exegesis of the scriptures.  Thomas Horn, an Anglican, did a lengthy 3 volumes tilled “Introduction to the critical Study of the Holy Scriptures” that was widely used in seminaries and also held this view.  It was only after the scientific opinion shifted in the 19th century that other long age positions developed to accommodate the long ages view.

Chap. 11 “Jesus View of the Age of the Earth” by T. Mortenson  p.311. He argues Jesus was a young earth creationist and cites the following: Jesus had an authoritative view of the scriptures. John 10:34-5, quotes Ps.82:6 “Scripture cannot be broken” Luke 24:25-7 Believe what the prophets have spoken. Mark 7:8 Says follow the commands of God rather than the traditions of men. In Mat. 4:7-10 he rebuked Satan using the Word of God.  Jesus also noted the following: Mt. 19:3-6 Adam and Eve as the first marriage; Luke 11:50 Able as the first prophet who was martyred; Mt. 24:38-9 Noah and the flood; Luke 17:28-32 the experience of Lot and his wife;  Mt. 10:15 the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah;  John 3:14, 6:32 on Moses, Luke 4:24-7 on Elijah; Mt. 12:40 on Jonah and the fish. Jesus took all of these as history. The following statements of Jesus reflect on the age of the earth: Mark 10:6 “But form the beginning of creation God made them male and female.”; Mark 13:19-20 “Since the Beginning of creation which God created, until now” Luke 11:50-1 “shed since the foundation of the world, which may be charged to this generation, form the blood of Able to the blood of Zechariah”: the phrase “from the beginning of creation” also occurs in Mark 13:19, 2 Pet 3:4  and Rev. 3:14; Paul uses “that God chose us before the foundation of the world” in Eph. 1:4 This phrase also occurs in Mt. 13:35, 25:34; Heb. 4:3; 9:26; Rev 13:8;17:8

Chap. 14 “Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the Genesis of Natural Evil.” by TH Ury . p.399 Answers to the problems of evil is called theodicy. Moral evil is distinguished from natural evil or disasters.  The 3 founders above held Genesis 1-11 as real history and the flood as global and catastrophic(p.401) Wesley wrote about the 6 day creation, and also affirmed the flood as 1656 yrs. from the creation. P.408 he saw the first sins and fall as subjecting a very good creation to corruption. Before the fall there was no lightning, no storms, no weeds, no poisons, no animals ripping flesh or crushing bones. He saw our present order as cursed and different from the once perfect state. p 408-10.
